Give Your Family the Gift of Dental Health
Family Dentistry Woodbury
With a range of family dentistry services at our Woodbury office, we are dedicated to helping you and your loved ones achieve happy, healthy smiles. Brushing and flossing teeth every day is very important, but it is equally important to visit a dentist twice a year. These checkups allow our dentists to detect potential complications in their earliest stages, and to clean the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth. To schedule an appointment for yourself or your loved ones, please contact us today.
Prevention is the Best Medicine
Dental plaque comprises more than 600 different kinds of bacteria, which can cause destructive dental diseases. Daily brushing and flossing helps control plaque buildup to reduce the risk of developing dental health issues. Any plaque missed while brushing your teeth can calcify into tartar, which is a harder substance that can’t be removed with a toothbrush and floss.
The American Dental Association (ADA) advises visiting the dentist at least once every six months for a cleaning and prevention appointment. Using professional equipment, one of our expert dental hygienists will thoroughly remove all traces of plaque and tartar from teeth surfaces, including underneath the gum line where gum disease begins. We’ll also help you and your family develop a more effective dental hygiene plan to reduce the risk of excessive plaque in the future.
A Closer Look at Your Family’s Dental Health
A professional cleaning is only half of a routine dental checkup. The examination includes a comprehensive inspection of your mouth to spot signs of tooth decay, gum disease, or dental damage. If detected in their early stages, oral infections can be stopped before they become worse. Dr. Erlandson and Dr. Roehrich will also perform an oral cancer screening using the VELscope™ system, which turns lumps, ulcers, tumors, or other abnormalities in the tissue fluorescent and thus easier to detect.
Emergency Dental Care
Unfortunately, even the most diligent oral hygiene plan can’t always protect your family’s smiles from emergencies. If a tooth chips, cracks, fractures, breaks, or is completely knocked out, call our office immediately to schedule an emergency dental appointment. With prompt action, the tooth may be saved without the need for extensive restorative dentistry procedures.
Mouthguards are a vital piece of equipment for many athletes, but did you know a mouthguard can serve many purposes in dental health care? We can custom-design sports mouthguards for patients of all ages to provide a safer, more comfortable fit than over-the-counter mouthguards. We can also provide mouthguards to prevent nighttime teeth-grinding, and to help patients with obstructive sleep apnea.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is a condition in which relaxed oral tissues block a patient’s airway during sleep. The condition is marked by periods of excessively loud snoring, followed by a moment of silence as the patient stops breathing, and then a gasp as the breathing process is restarted. This cycle can occur hundreds of times a night, and can deprive an OSA patient of necessary deep sleep. OSA is diagnosed by a sleep study specialist, and often treated using a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. Patients who can’t sleep with the cumbersome CPAP machine, or who travel a lot, can wear a specially-designed mouthguard to hold the jaw in a forward position during sleep, preventing airway obstruction.
