Gum disease and your health
Bacteria that builds up in the pockets in your gums and teeth can be caused by gum disease. This bacteria can enter your bloodstream if your gums bleed, which in turn can put you at risk for a number of serious general health issues such as:
- Stroke
- Pre-term births
- Respiratory Disease
- Arthritis
- Heart Disease
- Osteoporosis
- Diabetes
- Ulcers
Periodontal treatment
Comprehensive cleanings such as root planing and scaling which clear any build up in the roots of your teeth are the best way to contain infections and treat periodontal issues. Your dental professional might suggest using certain mouth washes or toothpastes to help with preventing periodontal disease. In more serious situations, antibiotics may need to be prescribed. For the most serious cases, surgery may be the only option.
