Nitrous oxide sedation, which is commonly referred to as “laughing gas,” is employed to ensure procedures are more comfortable for our clients. This gas is administered through a mask and creates a state of relaxation in patients. It has been the preferred method to make dental treatments easier for nervous patients for many years. If you are nervous about dental treatments, contact us to see if sedation is suitable for you.
Administration of sedation
Nitrous oxide kills pain and it creates a pleasurable feeling. Patients will experience a euphoric feeling throughout their whole body after just 5 minutes or so of breathing the gas. It is often described as a “happy feeling” by our patients. Undergoing nitrous oxide sedation is not a complicated process and patients do not need to fast prior to receiving it.
Are there risks?
Nitrous oxide is effective and very safe when administered by qualified dental professionals with appropriate training and equipment on carefully selected patients. Chronic or severe adverse effects of nitrous oxide in patients is extremely rare. The most common adverse effects would be vomiting or nausea which typically only occurs in less than 1% of all patients.
